On a sunny fall day, a deranged man entered a one-room Amish Schoolhouse in rural Pennsylvania with the intent to do evil. Armed with several weapons, he took children hostage before acting out his plan to shoot and kill his young, defenseless victims. This crime captivated the nation and received coverage from around the world. The lessons learned in compassion and forgiveness by the Amish community were inspirational to all who witnessed them. We also learned lessons of leadership, courage, crisis communications and the rise in school shootings. The events and lessons associated with this day will be with those of us that were there for the rest of our lives.
